The Fascination of Kite Power

A workgroup of the university of Delft is creating electricity with a kite. They were testing on the Dutch island Texel. You see several launches of the kite, one from the ground and two with the help of a blimp. The tests are part of the ‘Laddermill’ project by Wubbo Ockels, which aims to create energy from wind more efficiently than windmills.

WELL THAT WAS AMAZING AND YOU CAN GANG SMALLER ONES. i HAVE JUNK LAND IN PECOS, VAN HORN ETC. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WITH A BIG FLY WHEEL YOU COULD PITCH THE KITE UP AND DOWN WITH A THIRD LINE IN SYNC WITH THE FLY WHEEL. YOUR CAPSTAN CONCEPT IS MORE PRACTICAL.

Can anyone explain how electricity is produced in this video?

    what happened..?

  4. documentart says:

I don’t see how this kite would generate energy.

How about something more than shots of kites and a soundtrack?

haha! that would be crazy flaing with those long lines!! but you would have a lot of lift u there!! :-)

  6. kiteflix says:

Yes, good video but a narrator explaining may help.

The tension on the kite would pull a cable would around a generator shaft, as the kite ascends. When the reel is all the way out, the kite would be moved into a low-drag configuration and hauled back in. Think of it like a piston engine, with the tether on the kite acting as the piston, and wind providing the force for the “power stroke”.

Is the kite(s) flown indefinitely? What happens in the case of a storm? I’d love to see a vid where faq’s are answered. All I find are people flying kites.

  9. The avatar I have chosen is due to this malady that many do not know about windmills and ‘clean’ energy?

This photo is what happens when transmission failures occur in windmills. To
date no gear oil has been invented to withstand the pressures produced within
these transmissions. Most recently, the government gave Dow-Corning a big grant to work on it. Previously, many others had tried and failed.

Lets hope they find the answer very soon!

  10. So….KiteFLix, you could do better

  11. So…KiteFLix, You could do better yes?

I thought a ladder mill would be sort of a conveyor belt of kites going up into the jetstream. Inflated kites in series would lift the cable and future kites thousands of feet. The kites would then partly deflate for the descent. The whole thing would power a generator at the bottom the way a fan belt spins an alternator – by being wrapped around a pulley. Don’t know how the whole mess would be free of tangles.

at 4m06s when the man is strapping himself in … I noticed he has his bar on upside down with the open part of the hook facing up…. not as clever as he thinks he is ho hjo ho

    Im confused….

  16. otacon451 says:

wind speeds increase drastically the higher you go, so if you can fly something to capture it 5 -10x higher than a windmill that cost millions, you are doing pretty well.

eh, ja.. iemand in een harnas een kite aan een lier..de hindenburg, vet cool.. wat is de uitkomst?

    @ etsme

If you look at 4m17s the hook is in the right position.
Maybe he was upside down first, because he wasn’t properly attached yet? Don’t jump to conclusions if you don’t know the facts.

  24. etsme says:

    @ VANPUF

ok guess I dont but you cant tell at 4:17 neither.
I was only having a laugh in any case wise guy so wind your neck in.

  25. vanthof says:

Very mature of you what you did with my name. Appreciate it :)
