I’m a college student and I’m moving into my first apartment with some friends of mine. WIth the way natural gas prices are going, being energy efficent at home is of the utmost importance. I’ve been researching information on the subject but I haven’t been able to find any general information telling me how many solar panels i need to purchase

First off, if it is an apartment, you have no right to add solar panels to the roof unless you own it. Considering your circumstances, it sounds like you are renting, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you work out a deal with your landlord.
To find out how much you need, use this calculator:

Its not only solar panels you need, but also a battery and a UPS or Invertor, all these makes your lighting system work, anyway assuming you need 5lights, 1fan & 1TV for a back up of 4hrs, you need 1no 70watts solar panel, 1no 12v 120AH Battery and 1no 500VA UPS or invertor. But as our friend already answered you need to check out if it is an apartment.
