
we got a free pine tree at walmart for earth day, all it was was the tree and roots, no dirt or water, we have it in a cup of water for now, but we are wanting to plant it in a flower pot til it gets bigger, how would we do that and would it be ok?

The previous two answers are correct. Just put it in a flower pot for a few monthswith some dirt or plant it directly in the garden.. Just remember when you eventually place it in a permanent location you need to remember this tree can get 60-70 feet high in twenty years and 15- 20 feet wide so give it plenty of room.
It can grow in just about any soil, just stick it in the ground and make sure the roots are covered.
I would just go ahead and plant it in your yard in a sunny spot. Water daily until it is established.
