Is geothermal really worth the cost, is it worth putting into my new house?


I am unsure if I really want to spend the money for geothermal I have heard things but some good and some bad wanted opinions.

    Depends on how long you plan on having the house. If you’re going to be there for decades then yes it will eventually pay for itself. You want a contractor that has done tons of these installations and is certified in doing them. A reputable company should be able to give you and idea on how long it will take for you to make your money back on your investment.

    greatly depends on your climate……..like a heat pump, geothermal doesn’t seem to be suitable for very cold climates. I live in northern ohio, semi-remote location where the choices are oil, propane, electric or geothermal. 5 houses in our enclave: 1 oil, 2 geothermal, 2 propane. comparing notes with my neighbors, heating bills are lowest for the oil, propane is second. one geothermal can’t be compared because they have added 2 woodstoves plus electric heaters to cope. the most recently built house is a custom job for the owner of a mechanical contracting firm and he designed the heating system: propane, saying our climate is too cold for geo but it’s a good deal for more temperate areas (of which there seem few this winter).

    I have people who swear by it. Myself I went with heat pump with gas backup
